Egypt and Sinai
Egypt is the birthplace of Christian monasticism. The deserts of Egypt gave rise to the monastic movements of Saint Anthony the Great, Saint Pachomius, Saint Macarius, and the Desert Fathers. The monasteries of Egypt and Sinai preserve the oldest continuous monastic tradition in Christianity, chiefly within the Coptic Orthodox Church and, in Sinai, within the Greek Orthodox Church.
