How to Get a Diamonitirion – Mount Athos Entry Permit Guide (2026)

The diamonitirion (Διαμονητήριον) is the official entry permit required to visit Mount Athos (the Holy Mountain / Agion Oros). Only adult men may enter, and strict daily quotas apply. This complete 2026 guide explains the two types of permits, the application process, quotas, fees, and step-by-step instructions for pilgrims.

Daily Quotas & Who Can Enter

Only men are allowed (the "avaton" rule). Each day the Holy Mountain accepts:

  • 100 lay Orthodox pilgrims
  • 10 non-Orthodox pilgrims

These quota are not met lately. Hundreds of Orthodox pilgrims enter the Holy Mountain daily.

Hundreds of pilgrims may still enter in winter or low season, but high season (July–August, Christmas, Great Lent, Easter) books up months in advance.

Two Types of Diamonitirion

1. Genikon Diamonitirion (General Permit)

Issued by the Pilgrims’ Bureau. Allows you to stay 3 nights / 4 days (including departure day) and move freely between monasteries. Can usually be extended in Karyes for 2 extra nights.

2. Idikon Diamonitirion (Individual / Special Permit)

Issued directly by a specific monastery. Valid from 4 days up to 1 year. You are officially hosted by that monastery but in practice can often visit others.

How to Apply for the Diamonitirion (Step-by-Step 2026 Process)

  1. Book your date 3–6 months in advance

Email the official Pilgrims’ Bureau: [email protected]

Include: full name (exactly as in passport), date of birth, passport number & country, religion/denomination, preferred entry dates (give 2–3 options), and attach a clear scan/photo of your passport.
  2. Contact your chosen monastery

  • Non-Orthodox pilgrims may need to wait until 3 months before the date in some cases.
  • Dress modestly (long trousers, no shorts).
  • Bring your passport — the same one used in the application.
  • Monastery hospitality is free (bed + meals), but donations are appreciated.
